MANILA- International flights to and from the Philippines will remain suspended until Friday, May 8, Malacañang said Tuesday.
The government task force response to the COVID-19 crisis approved the recommendation to suspend international flights until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, presidential spokesman Harry Roque said.
However, the following flights are exempt from the suspension order:
- Official flights
- Emergency flights
- Cargo ambulance flights and medical supplies
- Climate mitigation flights
- Maintenance flights
- International flights for stranded foreigners
The Philippines on Sunday suspended all incoming commercial flights at 9 of its airports, namely Manila (Ninoy Aquino International Airport), Davao, Clark, Iloilo, Mactan-Cebu, Zamboanga, Kalibo, Laoag and Puerto Princesa.
The chief secretary for pandemic policy implementation, Secretary Carlito Gálvez Jr., said the flight moratorium would allow the government to update coronavirus testing and detection protocols “to adequately address the growing number of returnees and COVID-19 cases In Philippines”.
The Philippines had been flying back to the country from overseas Filipinos who lost their jobs amid the pandemic or decided to return home.
