MANILA – The Philippine Integrated Bar Association on Thursday urged lawyers to “do justice without delay” as it said criminal charges had been brought against suspects in the murder of attorney Eric Magcamit last week in Palawan.
Magcamit was addressing an audience when gunmen stopped his vehicle in the city of Narra. He suffered 3 gunshot wounds that led to his immediate death.
“Beyond constant condemnation and justified outrage, we must act decisively on the killings of lawyers because violence against judges, prosecutors, lawyers and our fellow workers in the justice sector mocks and erodes the rule of law.” said the IBP in praising the speedy action of the authorities on Magcamit’s murder.
“Because if those who administer justice are killed with impunity, how can the common citizen believe in due process or feel safe and protected?”
The group added that it was working to achieve the same result in the recent murder of attorney Joey Luis Wee in Cebu City.
“Justice is distant and time consuming for too many victims. As attorneys administer the justice system and hold key positions in government, we must humbly acknowledge our individual and collective responsibility and our shortcomings so that we can bring justice to justice without delay and courage.” , said.
“Let us promptly terminate long-pending cases, pass much-needed corrective laws and regulations, enforce the law fairly and without favoritism. Accountability and ‘bile justice’ are long-term sustainable solutions to the our nation’s dilemma. “
He urged all sectors to cooperate, since “justice and ultimately peace are everyone’s business.”
