HONG KONG: No country tolerates public servants who do not recognize their national identity or who do not sincerely pledge allegiance to the state when taking office and performing their duties, Chinese officials and experts said, dismissing accusations by some Western politicians about the latest decision of the China’s top legislature on the qualifications of members of the Hong Kong Legislative Council (LegCo).
It is a common practice adopted around the world for public officials to pledge allegiance to the state, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Thursday, responding to a question about criticism from the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany on the disqualification of four Hong Kong Legislators following the decision.
Robert O’Brien, the US national security adviser, also threatened to impose more sanctions in opposition to the latest decision, according to media reports.
Some Western countries have made arbitrary accusations against the decision, which are unconditional, unjustified and have no audience, Wang said at a press conference on Thursday.
Wang specifically noted that Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China, and “the question of the eligibility of Hong Kong LegCo members is a purely internal matter for China. Other countries have no right to comment on it or interfere with it. “
Shortly after China’s top legislature made a decision on Wednesday on the qualifications of LegCo members, four opposition lawmakers, Alvin Yeung Ngok-kiu, Kwok Ka-ki, Dennis Kwok Wing-hang and Kenneth Leung Kai -cheong, have a notorious record for creating trouble and are deemed unfit for their LegCo duties, were disqualified from the local legislature in Hong Kong with immediate effect.
The NPC Standing Committee formulated a set of arrangements, including standards to disqualify LegCo legislators, who will be disqualified from office immediately if the law determines that they have not complied with the legal requirements to maintain the Basic Law and honor the pledge of loyalty to Hong Kong.
The decision lists the circumstances in which they are deemed not to meet these requirements, including whether they advocate or support “Hong Kong independence”, refuse to recognize China’s sovereignty over the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). , seek interference in Hong Kong Kong by foreign countries or external forces, or commit other acts that endanger national security.
“In the United States, members of Congress must swear allegiance to the United States Constitution; in Britain, anyone who refuses to serve the Queen will not be allowed to become a member of Parliament, Wang said.
“As HKSAR LegCo members are also public officials, they must of course declare their allegiance to uphold the Basic Law and serve HKSAR,” said Wang.
“No country will turn a blind eye to violations of oaths and betrayals by government officials, including legislators. The unjustified accusations made by some Western politicians against China have fully exposed their double standards, “said Wang.
The fact that a few Western politicians are meddling in the matter, regardless of the basic reality of China and the previous political troubles in Hong Kong, is not only a major meddling in China’s internal affairs, but also an unsustainable indictment and Nonsense, Li Xiaobing, an expert on Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan studying at Nankai University in Tianjin, told the Global Times on Thursday.
