4X4 HISTORY REWRITES WITH COLLECTED DESIGN FORD 1970 REIMAGINATED
Celebrated Southern Californian Builder’s new custom truck features American Classic as part of the company’s exclusive Reformer series
CHATSWORTH, CA (April 21, 2020) – World-renowned vehicle designer and builder ICON 4×4 has added to its fleet of reimagined vehicles with its latest custom truck debut as part of its popular Reformer series. The new ICON Reformer features a completely reimagined 1970 Ford Ranger that is specially made to celebrate the classic styling of one of the best trucks in the world alongside complete vehicle reengineering. A key premise behind every ICON Reformer concept is to reinvent classic designs for use in the modern world, and the new 1970 Ford Ranger is a perfect combination of timeless aesthetics combined with high performance.
“At ICON 4×4, our Reformer series is a clearly unique approach to classic restoration, and this new 1970 Ford Ranger is a perfect example of how we work with customers to completely reimagine trucks like these at all levels,” says Jonathan Ward , main designer and founder of ICON 4×4. “What we are doing is rewriting history to some degree by creating a custom truck that can serve as a daily driver with timeless style, modern engineering, and none of the sacrifices commonly associated with conventional restorations.”
The new ICON Reformer is powered by a 426-hp Ford 5.0L Coyote V8 engine paired with a Ford AOD automatic transmission. An Advance Adapters Atlas II two-pole transfer case sends power to the axles, while PSC power steering vastly improves the handling and on-road capabilities of the new truck. The new truck uses a four-link rear suspension system, while the front uses radial arms. Eibach coil springs combine with Fox shocks to improve handling and ride comfort. To optimize rideability, ICON integrated Dynatrac ProRock axles. The front of the Reformer features a fortified Dana 44 with hardened axles, while the rear features an even more robust Dana 60 design.
ICON 4×4 designed a Hydroboosted Sport Brake system with Brembo for custom construction, which includes large rotors and calipers for greater stopping power while using BFGoodrich off-road tires. The new Reformer also features special custom-designed 18-inch forged aluminum wheels that were inspired by original factory steel wheels, complete with vintage hub caps.
Extensive interior improvements include a new Vintage Air Gen IV air conditioning system and custom chrome-plated aluminum knobs and bezels designed by ICON 4×4. Dakota’s digital displays add another civilized touch to further modernize the vehicle’s improved interior. The 1970 Ford Ranger Reformer is also outfitted with unique and subtle ICON badges. Timely, despite numerous modern upgrades discretely installed throughout the custom build, the customer requested that no power windows be installed to keep the truck on a vintage theme.
The new ICON 4×4 Reformer features legendary Maharam textiles and leather specially made from Relicate to perfectly match the original factory vinyl of the truck. All interior details are hand-sewn at home by ICON 4×4. To further protect the exterior body, ICON 4×4 coated the Ranger’s floorboards with a polyurea coating on the floor surface, and each body panel was powder coated prior to painting for better corrosion protection.
