MANILA, Philippines – Several House of Representatives lawmakers are seeking an investigation into the gruesome police shooting of a mother and her son in the city of Paniqui in Tarlac.
Marikina city representative Stella Luz Quimbo, whose grandmother was a teacher in Paniqui, said the incident “points to a systemic problem in how we prepare and evaluate those who monitor our citizens.”
Quimbo was referring to the death of Sonia Gregorio and her son Frank Anthony, who were shot by Police Sergeant Major Jonel Nuezca.
“This morning, I presented a resolution to launch an investigation into the current standards of the PNP to evaluate the tactical knowledge and mental aptitude of all its uniformed personnel,” Quimbo said in a statement.
“The murders of Sonya and Frank Gregorio are a symptom of lapses in our application of the law,” added the legislator.
Quimbo said that Congress must determine what reforms are necessary to guarantee that PNP personnel are healthy in the performance of their duties and assess whether it is time to prohibit police officers from carrying weapons when off duty.
“We cannot afford to lose any more lives due to impunity in the system, or policies that lead to unpreparedness or abuse by law enforcement officials, including the use of firearms off duty. . One death is too much, ”Quimbo said.
Apart from Quimbo, the Makabayan bloc also submitted a resolution requesting an investigation into the shooting incident.
In its resolution, the Makabayan bloc said that the killings of Tarlac’s mother and son “highlight the continuing violence perpetrated by state armed forces against innocent civilians.”
“It is necessary to end the police brutality enabled by the culture of impunity that plagues our country,” said the Makabayan bloc.
“It is imperative that members of Congress, as representatives of our people, defend the rights of our people and control the excesses and violations committed against them, especially at this time of crisis. Laws and rules must serve the interests of our people and must not be a weapon to suppress and oppress their rights, ”they added.
Meanwhile, in the Senate, six senators also sought an investigation into the series of “unlawful killings” of citizens, including the recent police shooting, with the ultimate goal of “breaking the culture of impunity,” especially among law enforcement agencies. .
