The Department of Health (DoH) will add a new severity classification for patients with moderate disease coronavirus 2019 (Covid-19) following reclassification of the severity of symptoms of the disease from the World Health Organization.
The DoH made the switch when the country recorded 1,407 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday, bringing the total number of active cases to 32,682, or 8.1 percent of the 402,820 cases overall.
Of the active cases, 93 percent are mild and asymptomatic cases, 4.4 percent are critical, 2.4 percent are severe, and 0.10 percent are moderate.
In an advisory issued Wednesday, the DoH said it would add the “moderate” severity rating to better streamline the classification of Covid-19 patients.
Under the current classification system, patients who are asymptomatic or experiencing mild symptoms of Covid-19 will be isolated and managed in quarantine facilities and temporary treatment and monitoring centers. Moderate, severe and critical cases will be admitted to hospitals.
Patients with moderate symptoms of Covid-19 are those with clinical signs of non-severe pneumonia (cough, dyspnea, or respiratory rate of 21 to 30 breaths / minute for adults and shortness of breath or shortness of breath and rapid breathing or contraction of the chest in children).
Mild cases are symptomatic patients with fever, cough, fatigue, anorexia, myalgia, other nonspecific symptoms such as nasal congestion, sore throat, nausea and vomiting, or loss of smell or taste before the onset of respiratory symptoms, but who they have no signs of pneumonia or hypoxia.
Severe patients have clinical signs of pneumonia accompanied by severe respiratory distress, seizures, inability to breastfeed or drink, loss of consciousness, or rapid breathing.
Critically ill patients manifest acute respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis, or septic shock.
Patients who do not develop any signs or symptoms of Covid-19 will be labeled asymptomatic.
Davao City has the highest number of new cases with 214, followed by Eastern Samar, Rizal, Cavite and Quezon Province.
Recoveries totaled 362,417, including 211 new recoveries. The death toll was 7,721, with the addition of 11 new deaths.
