MANILA, Philippines – Commerce Secretary Ramón López, who has been pushing for a further reopening of the economy through measures such as recovering sales throughout the mall over the holidays, tested positive for COVID-19.
Although the result came out on Monday, Lopez publicly confirmed it only on Wednesday after reporters asked him about the rumor on Viber. According to him, he was exposed to someone who tested positive on Tuesday last week, prompting him to get tested on Sunday.
López, 60, who was asymptomatic, said he was in isolation, although he had participated virtually in public events of the Department of Commerce and Industry (DTI) on Wednesday such as a press conference, a congressional hearing and a summit on manufacturing.
He also said that he had no interaction with President Duterte.
López is the fourth Cabinet Secretary to test positive for COVID-19 after the Secretary of Public Works, Mark Villar, the Secretary of Education, Leonor Briones, and the Secretary of the Interior, Eduardo Año.
