“They understand that their brain works differently.”
Between his illustrious music career, as a solo artist and No Doubt lead person, and his spot as one of the judges on NBC The voice, Gwen Stefani has been a megastar for quite some time.
Stefani also shares three children with her ex-husband Gavin Rossdale, and during a recent episode of The Zane Lowe Show, revealed that she found out she was dyslexic after her children had trouble reading.
“One thing I discovered when having children is that I have dyslexia, everyone has things that happen and mine was that,” he explained.
“And I feel like a lot of the problems that I have had or even decisions that I have made for myself stem from that, because now children, obviously, everything is genetic, they have some of those problems.”
But Stefani also emphasized that her children are getting a lot of support at school with “amazing teachers.” “They don’t have to be ashamed of it. They understand that their brain works in a different way. All of our brains do, you know what I mean?”
Stefani also reflected on how the discovery changed her perspective on her own struggles growing up, as she “failed in school.” “I was a good girl. I didn’t do anything wrong. It was very difficult for me to function in that square box at school that everyone was supposed to understand.”
“And my brain didn’t work like that; it still doesn’t. But it works in different ways that are probably a gift other people can’t do.”
And Stefani elaborated on that last point, talking about how to make music with No Doubt and by herself it has helped her overcome the struggles she faces with dyslexia.
“At that point, I had written the whole record without even knowing how to write a song and literally left my whole life for everyone to hear. And then I’m still in the band with [No Doubt band member Tony Kanal], on whom I depended so much, probably due to my dyslexia. “
“I didn’t know about this until now, but I don’t think I had any confidence in myself at the time. When I was writing a song or going on stage, it felt so good and the only thing that was going well for me.”
Stefani’s experience is a necessary reminder that we are all different, and we must all follow our creative bliss, regardless of whatever obstacles may be in the way.
