MANILA, Philippines – Attorney General Menardo Guevarra ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to investigate Friday’s riots inside New Bilibid Prison (NBP) that resulted in the deaths of nine inmates.
Guevarra issued the order after the report presented to him by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) appeared to be “quite crude.”
“The BuCor has presented a rather crude report on the violent incident early this morning at the NBP,” Guevarra said.
BuCor, which runs seven penal institutions located in various parts of the country, is an agency attached to the Department of Justice.
In a department order addressed to NBI officer in charge Eric Distor issued Friday night, Guevarra told Distor to “conduct an investigation into the tumultuous skirmish, which resulted in the deaths of at least nine PDLs (private persons freedom) that occurred in quadrant 4 of the NBP-East “.
Guevarra said that if the evidence warrants it, the NBI should file the corresponding charges against all the people involved.
He asked the NBI to submit an initial report to his office within 10 days.
