The National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) said it planned to present a demonstration before the executive judge of the Manila Regional Court of First Instance that would allow Nasino to bury his son who died last Thursday.

Nasino was separated from her baby on August 13, following a July 30 order from the Manila RTC saying the prison was not a place for babies, especially as the country was dealing with a pandemic.

The baby was placed in the care of his grandmother. But the boy fell ill several times and had to be rushed to the hospital. On Thursday, October 9, Baby River succumbed to a bacterial infection in her lungs at the Philippine General Hospital.

The women’s rights group Gabriela had also asked the court for compassion in allowing Nasino to see her son, saying that it was crucial for a child to be with his mother during the first months of life in order to receive adequate nutrition.
