CEBU CITY –– The city government is implementing a granular lockdown in areas where coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases were high to halt its resurgence.
The city’s mayor, Edgardo Labella, said it seemed more prudent to implement granular or neighborhood-level lockdowns to jumpstart the struggling local economy while ensuring people’s safety.
“When you talk about granular blockages, it could only be a street block. It could only be the confinement of a family. It could just be a site shutdown. So that depends on the situation, ”he said.
Labella, however, had yet to reveal the total number of localities that would be placed under granular blocking.
On Monday, police officers implemented strict border controls throughout the city to limit the number of people entering.
The borders, he said, would be closed for those traveling for pleasure and unofficial business, while workers, Authorized Personnel Outside the Residence (APOR) and those with legitimate concerns could enter the city, provided they have the proper documents. . .
From the single digits in October, the number of new COVID-19 patients in the city rose to double digits from last week, bringing its active cases to 292 on Sunday, according to the Health Department.
The city recorded 59 new COVID-19 infections on Saturday alone, followed by 30 on Sunday.
Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu, who is tasked with overseeing the government’s response to contain the spread of COVID-19 in Cebu, met with city officials Monday to discuss measures to slow the spread of the virus.
“Some people in the city may have already been too accommodating. I think it is necessary to remind you that the virus is still here. If the city government continues to implement health measures, I believe that we can stop the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases, ”said Cimatu.
