KORONADAL CITY, Philippines – The governor of South Cotabato, Reynaldo Tamayo Jr., allowed the lieutenant governor to temporarily assume the reins of the province when he announced to his supporters that he tested positive for Covid-19.

“Since I cannot physically fulfill my functions, I entrust the management of the province to the vice-governor (Vicente) de Jesús until I can fully recover,” Tamayo Jr. said in a statement published on the official FB page of the provincial government on Sunday. in the afternoon.

The governor learned of the result of his real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test on Friday, February 19. He admitted to having close contact with a Covid-19 patient on February 16.

“On Wednesday, February 17, the test came back negative,” the governor posted on his Facebook page. “On Thursday, February 18, I experienced the first symptoms. On Friday, February 19, I tested positive through the RT-PCR test, ”Tamayo said.

“I have been in quarantine since testing and, with the exception of my family members who tested negative on Saturday, February 20, I have no other close contact (with other people),” the governor said.

On December 17 of last year, Tamayo isolated himself with his seven-year-old son after the boy contracted SARS-CoV2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

“My wife (has been) immunosuppressed,” Tamayo said at the time, to explain why she had to meet her son in isolation. “I have no choice, even if I got negative, (but) be with him for the next 14 days in the isolation facility,” he said.

The other nine members of his family also tested positive for the SARS-CoV2 virus at the time, but they all overcame the disease. Tamayo, whose son eventually recovered, did not contract the disease at the time.
