MANILA, Philippines – On Sunday, Vice President Leni Robredo called the national government’s apparent satisfaction with its response to the coronavirus pandemic “upsetting.”

During his weekly radio show, “BISErbisyong LENI”, Robredo specifically mentioned the reaction of presidential spokesman Harry Roque, who “totally disagreed” with his public speech in which he criticized the government for apparently not having someone in charge of the government response to COVID-19.

Roque denied the claim that the government’s response to the pandemic was lacking.

But Robredo did not agree.

“What bothers here, Ka Ely, for example, is Secretary Roque’s reaction to our public speech because they seem to be happy. You know, the government seems happy with what it’s doing, ”Robredo told his co-host Ely Saludar, speaking in Filipino.

“That’s what bothers them: they get angry when they are told that they lack an answer. And when you tell them that the answer is missing, they will say that it seems they are being defamed, “added the vice president.

Robredo questioned the attitude to the continued increase in COVID-19 cases.

“For me, during a crisis like this, especially when people’s lives and health are at stake, it is better, Ka Ely, that our response is swift. We should not be happy with our response, ”he said.

“When we feel satisfied, even if the numbers show that things are not right, that is what makes things difficult. We will not improve because we feel that we are already very competent, “he added.

In July, Robredo sent Roque a list of suggestions on how to strengthen the government’s response to the health crisis.

Roque said the Palace welcomed the recommendations, but said they were nothing new and that all its proposals had been implemented for a long time.

As of August 30, there were 217,396 COVID-19 cases nationwide, of which 56,473 were considered active cases. Recoveries were 157,403, while the death toll was 3,520.
