Golden Globes Voters Vow To ‘Bring Black Members’ After HFPA Investigation

As the Golden Globes ceremony approaches, buzz around the annual show should be at its peak with celebrities getting ready for their outfits, practicing their red carpet phrases.

For the uninformed, the HFPA is the organization in charge of organizing the Golden Globes ceremony each year. There are 87 members who can vote for the awards and the name of the association was recently embroiled in controversy because none of the members were black journalists.

This year’s ceremony is receiving backlash for not including any of this year’s black-led Oscar contenders, such as Give 5 Bloods, Judas and the Black Messiah, Ma Rainey’s black ass, Y One night in Miami, in the group’s best picture award nominations, despite being Oscar favorites.

In an official statement, the HRPA has stated that it is committed to ensuring that its membership reflects communities around the world. The statement further reads: “We understand that we need to bring in black members, as well as members of other underrepresented backgrounds, and we will work immediately to implement an action plan to achieve these goals as soon as possible.”

The association had reportedly turned down a black applicant named Samantha Ofole-Prince in 2013. Post that, then-HFPA president Theo Kingma, spoke about the lack of black members in an interview and said that there is no one ( black) because they can not let me come to live here.
