Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 10) – Two of the country’s revered national sports teams retained their places on the world rankings for their respective sports, which were released Thursday.
The Gilas Pilipinas men’s national basketball team remains in position 31 in the world ranking of the International Basketball Federation, accumulating 340.8 points. The players maintained their position despite scoring two victories in the recently concluded FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifiers in Bahrain.
The Filipino dribblers are also the sixth best team in Asia behind no. 3 Australia (with 666.5 points), no. 23 Iran (432.1), no. 25 New Zealand (420.5), no. 28 China (363.7) and no. 30 South Korea (341.1).
Meanwhile, Gilas Pilipinas Women slipped down to occupy the 50th best women’s basketball team in the world with a total of 124.5 points. The Philippines ranks seventh in Asia behind no. 2 Australia (714.5), no. 9 China (571.5), no. 10 Japan (540.1), no. 19 South Korea (333.3), no. 33 Chinese Taipei (181.1) and no. 34 New Zealand (171.1).
In soccer, the Philippine Azkals continue to rank 124th out of 210 countries in the Fédération Internationale de Football Association world rankings, with 1,136 points.
Despite ranking 23rd among Asian countries, the Azkals finished as the third best team in the Southeast Asian region behind no. 93 Vietnam (1,258 pts.) And no. 111 Thailand (1,178 pts.).
Gilas will see action again in February for the third window of the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifiers, while the Azkals will continue their quest for a season in both the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the AFC Asian Cup. 2023 next year.
