SANTA FE, NM – “Game of Thrones” author George RR Martin will not be able to build a seven-sided castle-style library at his complex in Santa Fe, prompting objections from neighbors.

The city’s Historic District Review Board denied a request Tuesday to allow Martin to exceed the building’s height limit in the historic district where he lives, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported. The project included a roof platform and an elevator tower.

“It is a medieval castle and I don’t understand how we could pass it in this style,” said board member Frank Katz.

Mark Graham lives south of the property and said residents could not “bear to have a castle in the neighborhood.”

“With the notoriety of Mr. Martin and ‘Game of Thrones,’ we absolutely fear that our neighborhood will become the next treasure hunt, that his fans will be looking to find the castle that is in the middle of Santa Fe,” said Graham.

Officials also denied a similar proposal earlier this year, saying the project did not meet standards for height and style and did not fit the character of the historic district.

Alexander Dzurec of the architectural firm Autotroph Inc. filed the application for the height exemption and said Tuesday that the library was intended to house “a very considerable collection” of literature and “other collectibles.”

More than 40 residents had signed a letter urging the Historic District Review Board to reject the application.

Guy Gronquist signed the letter and read it at the meeting, saying the architect had gone to great lengths to draw comparisons with existing medieval-style structures in Santa Fe. But those buildings are not surrounded by houses, he said.

“The fact is that the proposed building remains a prominent castle in the middle of a residential neighborhood in Santa Fe,” the letter read. “IT WILL BE VISIBLE.” IB
