Better late than never? 2020 first gets a taste of the “Great Dramatic Show” tonight (Friday, December 18, 2020) as middleweight wrecking machine Gennady Golovkin defends his IBF middleweight title against undefeated mandatory challenger Kamil Szeremeta.

“GGG” has seen no action since narrowly defeating Sergiy Derevyanchenko in October 2019 as COVID, injuries and other issues have prevented it from facing Szeremeta. He was expected to face Canelo Álvarez in a trilogy match early next year, but Álvarez recently parted ways with DAZN, so it’s unclear what the Kazakh bully’s next step will be if he beats Szeremeta.
Other prominent names include super featherweight champion Hyun Mi Choi, undefeated prospect Ali Akhmedov and former title challenger John Ryder.

IBF Middleweight Championship: Gennadiy Golovkin vs. Kamil Szeremeta
Round one: Szeremeta takes the center and looks to advance behind his jab. Golovkin pulls out several of his own and they are heavier. Golovkin’s right hand blocked, back to the jab battle. Halfway through the round. Short uppercut and right hook from Golovkin, who is now the forward. Szeremeta with a 1-1-2. Both land with the right hand on the center ring and then finish off. Szeremeta still hits with him, takes a pair of right hands down and gets on his butt for a left hook to the bell. He’s awake with plenty of time to spare. 10-8 Golovkin.
Second round: Golovkin advances with punches, Szeremeta looks to exchange with him. Clinch. Golovkin with a counter hook. Szeremeta to the body, landing punches. The hard right hand seems to wobble Szeremeta and cause a clinch. Shot at Golovkin’s body. Left hook up, right cross mid-round. Szeremeta nails a left hook to the body. Golovkin jab lands, uppercut blocked. Szeremeta tries to come back with a combo. He steps in during an exchange and cuts off his ear for another drop. Golovkin on the attack when he gets up, setting things up with the jab. Szeremeta ties. Nasty shot to the body of Golovkin, who continues to stalk. One more right hand. 10-8, 20-16 Golovkin.
Round three: Szeremeta still trying to return the ball, Golovkin remains patient. Exchange of blows in the center. Szeremeta with a left hook down. Jabs from the Pole, slides a cross, makes a short right around the guard. Halfway. Clinch. Szeremeta combinations. Golovkin still brings out his best, hits him with a right uppercut. Heavy combination. Right hand to the body, left hook behind, close. Right hand to the head and left to the liver before the bell. 10-9, 30-25 Golovkin.
Round four: Golovkin continues to get him back with the jab. Szeremeta warned of low blows. Flowing combinations for Golovkin, who shrugs off a strong left hook. 1-1-2 by Szeremeta, clinch. Golovkin with a jab-uppercut. Szeremeta lands a few punches, takes a 1-2. Good 1-2 lands for him. Halfway through the round. Clinch. Golovkin hits a ground-floor right hand, blasts it with an over-the-shoulder right hand and a few follow-up shots. Szeremeta beats the bill once again. More heavy blows from the champion. Szeremeta kept trying to shoot, cracked with a shot to the liver. Long series of blows from Golovkin, try a 1-2. 10-8, 40-33 Golovkin
Fifth round: back to commerce in the center. Golovkin goes high-low, clinch. Jab shot to the liver. 1-2. Szeremeta with a good right cross but totally incapable of hurting Golovkin. Golovkin’s left hooks. More hits, clean 1-2. Clinch. Drive right by the Pole. Halfway. Golovkin tries a head-to-head combo, then a clean uppercut. Heavy hook, short uppercuts, forehand crosses. Golovkin’s strong lefts point-blank. Another strong uppercut after dodging a combo. 1-2 connect. 10-9, 50-42 Golovkin.
Round six: Golovkin continues to win the jab battle. Hit to the body, double uppercut. Szeremeta fires a combo before tying. Hard right hand to Golovkin’s body and an uppercut behind him. They negotiate rights. Both fire hooks on the ground floor. Short-range exchange. The left hook lands for Golovkin in the middle. Good 1-2. Szeremeta changes levels with his jab, takes another heavy hit to the body. Counterattack from Szeremeta was met with a long combo. 10-9, 60-51 Golovkin.
Seventh round: Golovkin returns to the attack, stings him with a right hand. Clinch. Szeremeta with a combination on the ground floor. Good uppercut. Doubla jab puts Szeremeta back in his seat. Golovkin sends combinations, Szeremeta tries to respond before closing. Hard hit to the body of Golovkin, uppercut, rivet in the middle. Uppercut to the body shot. Large uppercut. Clinch. Clinch.
