MANILA – GAB Chairman Baham Mitra said Tuesday that his agency could act on the indefinite suspension of Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) superstar Calvin Abueva very soon.
Mitra said Abueva and Phoenix interim coach Topex Robinson went to the GAB office in Makati to discuss the possibility of Abueva’s ban being lifted.
While Commissioner Ed Trinidad, who met with Abueva and Robinson, did not commit to the uprising, Mitra said “Abueva’s request will be discussed and decided by the board at the next board meeting.”
If GAB moves to finally end Abueva’s ban, he may be allowed to travel to Angeles and join Fuel Masters in the PBA bubble.
However, Mitra added: “He will undergo a seminar on the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards of a Professional Athlete once the GAB Board decides to return his license.”
‘For the good of all’
Meanwhile, PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial asked fans, especially those clamoring for Abueva’s return, to understand as they are working to get the beleaguered player back in action.
“If you are mad at me, be patient. This is for the good of all (If you are angry with me, I apologize for the moment. This is for the good of all) “, said Marcial during the press release of the PBA bubble.
It’s been more than a year since the league slapped Abueva with an indefinite suspension for unsportsmanlike behavior during last year’s PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
On when the PBA will be able to lift the sanction, Marcial replied, “I do not want-commit (I don’t want to commit) “.
However, Phoenix team manager Paolo Bugia said Abueva is now authorized to join the team for practices. (PNA)
