PARIS – The French government announced Sunday that it would advance the night curfew in 15 regions by two hours to help fight the coronavirus as infections remain high.
The 15 of the 101 departments in France affected by the change to a curfew that starts at 6:00 pm instead of 8:00 pm include the department of Les Alpes-Maritimes, where the Mediterranean city of Nice is located. .
The other areas are concentrated in the east of the country and Paris, for now, has gotten rid of the additional restriction.
“The virus continues to spread in France … but with a disparity between regions,” said government spokesman Gabriel Attal when announcing the measure.
“If the situation deteriorates further in certain areas, we will make the necessary decisions,” he told broadcaster TF1.
The move had been urged by mayors increasingly concerned that their local health systems are being overwhelmed by the influx of new cases.
Attal also confirmed that theaters, cinemas and concert halls will not be able to reopen beginning January 7, the most recent minimum date given for their closure.
Meanwhile, Attal defended the pace of France’s campaign to vaccinate against Covid-19, which TF1 noted has seen only 332 people vaccinated in the country so far compared to more than 130,000 in Germany since the weekend began. past.
Arguing that France was focusing its campaign on nursing homes, which took longer, he said: “We are not going to judge a vaccination campaign that will last six months in just a few days.”
