MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine government confirmed Thursday the rescue of one of 39 Filipino crew members from a cargo ship that recently disappeared off the coast of Japan.

The Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Osaka, in a report to the Department of Labor and Employment, identified the rescued Filipino as CEO Edwardo Sareno.

“A member of the Filipino crew was found adrift at sea, but alive,” POLO said.

The Japanese Coast Guard keep going to search for the other missing crew using four rescue patrol boats, two planes and divers from the Haneda Air Base Special Rescue Team, he added.

According to POLO, the Panamanian-flagged freighter made a distress call from Amami Oshima Island in the Japanese prefecture of Kagoshima.

The ship was carrying 43 crew members, including 39 Filipinos, two New Zealanders, an Australian and a Singaporean.

“Typhoon No. 9 was approaching the surrounding waters at that time,” noted POLO.

The freighter was reportedly loaded with cattle and left Napier port in New Zealand and headed for Tangshan port in China, it further said.

In a separate statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said it continues to monitor the crew’s rescue mission.

“The Consulate General in Osaka is monitoring the situation and coordinating with the Japanese Coast Guard, which is launching a second search and rescue mission ahead of the expected incoming typhoon,” the DFA said.

DFA, along with POLO, is also coordinating closely with Korpil Ship Management and Manning Corp., which is the local crew agency for Philippine seafarers. [ac]
