MANILA (UPDATE) – Former Senator Maria Teresa Aquino-Oreta, sister of the late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., has passed away, her son, the Mayor of Malabon, Antolin “Len Len” A. Oreta, said Friday.

Born on June 28, 1944, Aquino-Oreta was president of the Senate Committee on Education, Art and Culture at the 11th Congress.
He finished his elementary school at the Colegio del Espíritu Santo in Mendiola and finished high school at the Colegio de la Asunción. He then studied Literature and history at the Convento de la Asunción and received his International Studies degree in Ducal City, Ávila, Spain. He became a Lieutenant Colonel (Reserved) in the Philippine Air Force after earning a Master’s Degree in National Security Administration from the Philippine National Defense College.
Before being elected to the Senate in 1998, she represented the Malabon City-Navotas district in the House of Representatives for three consecutive terms, from 1987 to 1998.
In former President Joseph Estrada’s 2000 impeachment, she voted against opening a second on what allegedly contained information against Estrada. Estrada was later overthrown as president in a four-day bloodless revolt.
