MANILA, Philippines – The former mayor of Laguna, convicted of rapist and Calauan murderer, Antonio Sánchez, wants to be transferred from the New Bilibid Prison Hospital to the General Hospital of the Philippines in Manila, a Justice Department official confirmed Wednesday.
“He is scheduled for more medical examinations and has applied to be transferred to the PGH. The NBP hospital is awaiting the advice of the PGH, ”Deputy Secretary of Justice and spokesman Markk Perete told reporters.
“He had a swab test last Monday, but it usually takes three to five days before the result is released,” he added.
Sánchez was sentenced to seven life terms (up to 40 years in prison) for the rape and murder of Eileen Sarmenta and the murder of her boyfriend Allan Gómez in 1993.
Perete said that Sánchez suffers from an electrolyte imbalance secondary to acute gastroenteritis. Chronic kidney disease, hypertension and benign prostatic hypertrophy.
On the other hand, the spokesman for the Corrections Office (BuCor), Gabriel Chaclag, said that Sánchez has a shot and suffers from shortness of breath.
Chaclag said that Sánchez was initially taken to Hospital ng Muntinlupa on Monday night, but since the hospital has no more room for a probable COVID patient, prison authorities took him back to the national penitentiary.
Last year, Sánchez made headlines after the Justice Department announced that he could get out of jail using the good behavior allowance under the controversial good conduct time allowance law.
The controversy surrounding the GCTA concession led the authorities to review its implementation to exclude those convicted of heinous crimes from coverage.
A Senate investigation into the matter also resulted in the revelation of other anomalies within the NBP, such as the “hospital pass for sale.” [ac]
