MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday, May 4, said he was “humiliated” by the number of victims of the coronavirus outbreak.
The president particularly apologized to the Ayala group and businessman Manuel V Pangilinan (MVP), with whom he had been fighting for months over supposedly “onerous” provisions in government water contracts that were still under negotiation.
“There may be legal problems but I am ready to speak and I will be reasonable. ‘Yung mga masakit kong (My painful) speaks to Ayalas and Pangilinan, I apologize for the painful words. If you can find it in your heart to forgive me, “Duterte said as he joked that” he would lower God “if businessmen refuse to accept his apology.
Duterte made the peace attempt during a nightly speech on the government’s response to the coronavirus, where he thanked large companies for contributing crucial resources to combat the outbreak.
Just a few months before the outbreak, when Duterte threatened Ayalas and the MVP, he would imprison, take over their water businesses, “ruin” their faces and “shoot” they.
Before issuing an apology to Ayalas and MVP, Duterte also thanked big business for their help and asked them to understand that their tirades were part of “government” and their “sworn duty” in government.
“But if you can forget it for now, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping us meet the needs of the moment. I can promise you, I will be nice and if you want to look at me, we can talk. Naubos na po pagkasuplado ko dahil sa COVID (My arrogance is exhausted due to COVID), “said Duterte.
The Firebrand president said he was “humiliated” by the outbreak and the response from large business groups that have so far involved in almost every aspect of the government response, from the presentation national quarantine centers, increased testing, to provide crucial logistics services, among others.
In addition to Ayalas and MVP, Duterte had delivered cursed speeches involving other businessmen such as Roberto Ongpin, López y Prietos, and Lucio Tan. (Look back: Duterte’s fights with big companies) – Rappler.com
