Flight attendants in China have reportedly been urged to wear disposable diapers and avoid aircraft toilets as part of the effort to stop the spread of COVID-19, according to new guidelines issued by the Civil Aviation Administration of China.

“It is recommended that cabin crew members wear disposable diapers and avoid using the toilets, except in special circumstances to avoid risk of infection,” according to a CNN report that translated parts of the original guidelines.

The recommendation came along with the rules for other standard personal protective equipment, or PPE, like masks, gloves, and goggles. Those rules echoed those issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), which also require flight crews to wear disposable gloves and masks.

The CDC guidelines include details on how to thoroughly clean an airplane after each one and how to dispose of protective gear without spreading the virus. “After use, PPE must be removed carefully to avoid contaminating skin or clothing,” the guidelines said.

In October, data showed that flight attendants and other airline workers had lower rates of COVID-19 infection. Airlines said at the time that it illustrated just how effective PPE was.

Meanwhile, the American Flight Attendants Association-CWA urged flight personnel to “wear a mask, wash hands frequently and use all the safety tools at our disposal to stay healthy.” In June, the union said masks were essential to building trust with customers.

However, the Chinese guidelines went a step further, saying that by using disposable diapers, the cabin crew could avoid the usually cramped bathrooms on planes. They said the small spaces could be hotspots for the spread of the coronavirus. The recommendations were intended for flight attendants in areas with especially high infection rates.

Meanwhile, pilots and other members of the flight crew were asked to wear goggles and masks, but not diapers, according to Bloomberg.
