A fire struck the plant of JG Summit Petrochemicals Group, a Gokongwei company, in Barangay Simlong in Batangas city on Saturday night, according to the Batangas City Fire Station.

It was the police who informed the fire brigade about the fire, which started around 10 at night.

One person was reported injured, according to Colonel Rex Malimban, head of the Batangas Provincial Police Office.

“The initial [information] we received was that the used oil was on fire, ”Malimban said in a telephone interview around 11 pm.

The amount of petrochemicals stored at the facility was not immediately known, but Malimban said an initial report that reached his office said the fire had already reached the fourth alarm.

Malimban said several fire trucks from the Batangas Fire Protection Office had been deployed, while other firefighting units at the regional office were on standby in case reinforcements were needed.

As of this writing, the fire was still ongoing.
