FIBA has confirmed the dates for the FIBA 2023 Basketball World Cup, with the exhibition event taking place from August 25 to September 10, 2023.
The approved dates of the competition have been decided by the FIBA Central Board after consulting with the host nations and a recommendation from the FIBA Competition Commission.
The FIBA 2023 Basketball World Cup will see the Group Stage in Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines, with the Final Stage to follow in the Philippine capital city, Manila. It is the first in the history of the competition to be held in more than one country.
With this announcement also comes the launch of the official website for the FIBA 2023 Basketball World Cup, which will be continually updated prior to this iconic event.
The FIBA 2023 Basketball World Cup will again feature 32 national teams from around the world, with the expanded format adopted for the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup in China, the largest FIBA event to date.
Held in eight cities in China, last year’s event saw Spain crown the world champion after defeating Argentina 95-75 at the Wukesong Sport Arena in Beijing.
Continuing the success of the FIBA Competition System implemented in 2017, the qualification process for the FIBA 2023 Basketball World Cup will include six windows over a period of 15 months in the four regions of Africa, America, Asia / Oceania and Europe.
The road to the 2023 World Cup in Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines started in February 2020 with the start of the European Pre-Qualifiers for the FIBA 2023 Basketball World Cup, which will qualify eight teams for the European Qualifiers. Next, in 2020, the FIBA Basketball World Cup of the Americas Prequalifiers will qualify four teams for the Americas Qualifiers.
Qualification for the FIBA 2023 Basketball World Cup will take place from November 2021 to February 2023, with 80 national teams competing for a spot in the World Cup. The first qualification window will be played from November 22 to 30, 2021.
