MANILA – The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced on Friday that it will eliminate the round trip format for the rest of its continental cup qualifiers due to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

“All games in both windows must be played in ‘bubbles’, rather than games at home and away, with the agreement of the host public health authorities and in accordance with FIBA health protocols,” said FIBA In a statement.

FIBA will designate a host city for the bubble.

“The hosts will be decided regionally and announced in due course,” he added.

FIBA said that a bubble will converge on a qualifying group, meaning Gilas Pilipinas Men, Thailand, Indonesia and South Korea, which make up Group A of the FIBA Cup Asia qualifiers, would be isolated in a single area. .

However, FIBA also said that it is possible for a bubble to have two qualifying groups.

The Covid-19 pandemic forced the postponement of the February 20 battle between Gilas Men and Thailand at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

FIBA has yet to decide when the game will be rescheduled, although its first round is expected to take place just before the regular November window, where both teams will meet again.

Ahead of the scheduled rematch between Gilas Men and Thailand on November 30, Gilas Men will face South Korea first on November 27 in a battle that will pit undefeated teams and big favorites to top Group A. (PNA)
