MANAMA (Bahrain) – The Philippines got off to a brilliant start and held on to win their second match against Thailand in the Bahrain bubble, 93-69.
Gilas started the game on an 11-0 streak that seemed to spoil the final outcome of the game. Dwight Ramos and Juan Gomez De Liaño continued to be brilliant for the Philippines from the start, orchestrating a crisp ball rotation that led to some sweet pitches. The Philippines shot 10-18 from beyond the three-point line at halftime, highlighted by three 3-pointers by rookie Calvin Oftana.
They would finish the game with 16 triples in total, tied at 5th the most in the Asian Cup Qualifiers so far.
Thailand put in a good effort to recover and keep the score at attacking distance in the first half, but Gilas continued to push the pace and stretch the lead.
Chanatip Jakrawan had his best game yet in a Thailand jersey with a game-high 34 points with 12 rebounds, 2 blocks and one steal. Wattana Suttisin was also a great contributor with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
Four players scored in double digits for the Philippines led by the De Liaño brothers who combined for 33 points. Older brother Javi outshined Juan in this game with 19 points on 4-4 shots from beyond the arc.
The victory gives the Philippines a 3-0 record so far in the Asian Cup Qualifiers, while Thailand continues to struggle with a winless record after 4 matches played.
