MANILA – Facebook has deactivated 3 accounts that “illegally assumed” the identity of the country’s top policeman to scam money, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Sunday.

In a statement, the PNP said that cybercrime investigators traced fake accounts, using the name of PNP Chief General Camilo Cascolan, to various cases of online scam and scam.

The accounts have been used to entice “Facebook users to donate funds allegedly to buy computer tablets for students in poor urban communities for online classes,” Brig said. General Marvin Manuel Pepino, head of the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group.

The PNP said the ACG has launched an investigation and accumulation of cases regarding the activities of the people behind the fake Facebook accounts.

Four persons of concern have also been subpoenaed to appear before the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group for ongoing investigations into fake Facebook accounts, Pepino said.

Those behind the fake Facebook accounts can be charged with violating the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 and the Revised Penal Code for scam or scam, Pepino added.
