Spoilers for the Netflix movie Extraction follow below.
If you sat down to watch the new Netflix action movie Extraction, you may not be prepared for an ending as dark and ambiguous as the one you get. But luckily we got some clarity from the director of the movie, Sam Hargrave, about what everything means.
The story of Extraction follow a mercenary named Tyler Rake, played by Chris Hemsworth. Throughout the entire movie, it is clear that Tyler has a death wish. He is haunted by the death of his son, and even when we first meet him, he jumps off a cliff like he’s nothing. He doesn’t really care if he lives or dies, which is partly what makes him so deadly.
But her relationship with Ovi (Rudraksh Jaiswal), the child who is in charge of extracting from Dhaka changes it. He sympathizes with the boy, and certainly sees some of his son in the innocent boy. This is no longer a job, it is a mission: he should get Ovi out safely, and doing it means not dying. At least until his mission is complete.

And that’s basically what happens. The film ends with a climate shooting on a bridge, and as soon as Ovi reaches the other side and Tyler breathes a sigh of relief, Tyler is mortally wounded by Farhad (Suraj Rikame), the young man who wanted to prove his worth to drug trafficker Amir (Priyanshu Painyuli) Tyler apparently dies right in front of Ovi and Tyler’s mercenary partner Nik (Golshifteh Farahani)
But the final moments of the film offer a sense of hope. We watch Ovi jump into a pool and sink to the bottom, reflecting Rake’s first scene. But when Ovi comes out of the water, a figure appears in the background that looks a lot like Tyler Rake, and then the screen goes black.
So is Chris Hemsworth’s character alive? Have you trained Ovi again? Is Ovi hallucinating, hinting that Tyler’s spirit will be with him forever? Or is he just a stranger who looks a lot like Tyler Rake?
Collider himself, Steve Weintraub, asked these questions Extraction Director Sam Hargrave during an exclusive interview recently, and the filmmaker said that every opinion about what happens at the end of the film is valid:
“What would hopefully happen is that people will discuss that later, and you can tell which one you think is right for you.”

But in case that isn’t satisfying to you, Hargrave offered a peek behind the curtain at how they landed on this. Extraction ending. As a result, the original ending of the film (which was written by Joe Russo) showed very explicitly that Tyler Rake died. He sacrificed his life to save Ovi. Her bow was complete. But the trial audiences were split in half as to how they felt about that sad conclusion:
“We had a version of the movie, and we tested it a lot, and it wasn’t surprising that a lot of people wanted the character to live, and some people wanted him to die. People were torn; it was almost in the middle. We want to attract as many people as possible without compromising the integrity of the story. So we think a pretty good compromise is to make an ambiguous ending. If people, on the one hand, feel that the story is complete and it is a story of redemption through sacrifice, then for them, it will be where the child is imagining [Rake standing there], and now you say ‘Yes, I am satisfied’. If you feel like you love Tyler Rake, and you love Chris Hemsworth, and you want a sequel, and you’re like, ‘There’s no way, you can.’ Don’t kill him! ‘Then that’s Tyler Rake standing there looking at you. So, by the way, we don’t focus on the character that is standing there. ”
As for Hargrae’s preferred ending? Well, it’s probably where Rake dies, because that was his original idea:
“Actually, that was a test. Because we filmed multiple endings. We filmed many different ways to accomplish this. Because in the original script, and this was my idea, Rake doesn’t live. His story was complete because he found something to keep him alive, and his journey was completed when he reached redemption through sacrifice. He made the decision with which he agreed. He had come to terms with his past and his present choice saved this child, and if that meant he was dying, then so be it. And that was his journey in my mind.

But it wasn’t just the trial hearings that convinced Hargrave and Co. to go with an ambiguous ending. It was also the suggestion of the Netflix executive in charge of the original movies, Scott Stuber:
“The director of the original Netflix movies, Scott Stuber, suggested something very cunning. His point was well taken, fantastic, and I’ll remember it forever: You have to remember the difference between an intellectually satisfying ending and an emotionally satisfying ending. And so we wrestle with that concept of “Is it more emotionally satisfying that Rake lives or Rake dies?” And honestly, the vote was that it’s more emotionally satisfying for him to live. Because the boy gave him something to live for, and now he’s living for it. “
Finally, Hargrave says that Extraction The end is a commitment that he thinks makes both sides happy:
“So basically what you see in the movie is a compromise. Because many of us in the original camp did not want him to survive, many in the new camp wanted him to live. We tried it, and it was literally in the way for people who wanted it to live rather than die. So we thought, hey, we’ll give you the best of both worlds, we’re going to have this ambiguous ending where you can choose your own adventure. “
So what happens at the end of Extraction? Well, according to the director of the film, that depends on you.
