The European Parliament has called on the Philippine government to implement all the recommendations of a report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
In a joint motion for a resolution on the situation in the Philippines, adopted on September 16, the European Parliament expressed its “deepest concern about the rapidly deteriorating human rights situation in the Philippines; recognizes the publication of the report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights of June 2020, and calls on the Government of the Philippines to adopt and implement all the recommendations listed therein ”.
He strongly condemned what he described as the thousands of “extrajudicial executions” and other human rights violations related to the Duterte government’s drug campaign.
He called on the government to immediately end violence against suspected drug-related criminals and to disband private and state-backed paramilitary groups.
It also called for impartial, transparent, independent and meaningful investigations of all extrajudicial killings, including the deaths of Jory Porquia, Randall “Randy” Echanis, and Zara Alvarez.
He said he was alarmed by the deterioration in the level of press freedom in the Philippines and condemned harassment, intimidation, unfair prosecution and violence against journalists.
In particular, she cited the case of Maria Ressa and demanded that all charges “for political reasons” against her and her colleagues be dropped.
The European Parliament said the Philippine authorities should renew the broadcasting license of former media giant ABS-CBN Corp.
The European Parliament reiterates its call to drop the charges against Senator Leila de Lima, release her while awaiting trial and allow her to exercise her rights and duties as an elected deputy.
It also expresses its deep concern over the recent approval of the Antiterrorist Law and recalls that “in no case can promotion, protest, dissent, strikes and other similar exercises of civil and political rights be considered terrorist acts.
It condemned all forms of violence against women and attacked the “repeated misogynistic statements” of President Rodrigo Duterte.
He also denounced all forms of violence against LGBTQI people, and again criticized Duterte for “degrading and sexist statements about people who identify as belonging to the LGBTQI community.”
The European Parliament voiced its alarm at the increasing levels of corruption under the Philippine administration and called on the authorities to redouble their efforts to combat corruption effectively.
