The NATIONAL security adviser, Hermogenes Esperon Jr., on Wednesday expressed his support for two officials, under fire from “red label” personalities, for their crusade against progressive groups allegedly linked to communist groups.
In a public briefing, Esperon said that Lieutenant General Antonio Parlade Jr. and Undersecretary of Communications Loraine Badoy, spokespersons for the National Task Force to End the Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), were only “telling the truth. “when they gave their statements.
Esperon said that Parlade was only saying that the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and its armed wing, the New People’s Army (NPA), have their “front organizations” that are connected to their “underground” groups like Kalipunan ng Gurong Makabayan. . (Kaguma), the Confederation of Filipino Migrants and Patriotics, Kabataang Makabayan, Malayang Kilusan ng Bagong Kababaihan (Makibaka) and Makabayang Kawani ng Pilipino.
Esperon also claimed that some of these “underground” movements have connections to some progressive groups, which he repeatedly referred to as “front organizations” such as the Alliance of Concerned Teachers, Migrant, League of Filipino Students, Anakbayan, Kabataan party-list , Guild of University Editors of the Philippines, Gabriela and even the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers.
Esperon clarified, however, that these organizations were not communist groups and even described them as “legal and good organizations.
For more than a week, Parlade has been in the news for her controversial statement in which she issued a warning against actress Liza Soberano and Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray for participating in a forum organized by the women’s group Gabriela Youth, ”said Esperon.
Since then, Parlade has denied that he was “red-labeling” celebrities, but instead claimed that he was only advising them not to get involved with Gabriela.
Esperon said: “It is right now that we are watching and we have spokespersons who are telling the truth and the whole nation must wake up now. What do we really want? Do we really want to extend the 52 years of CPP-NPA by disturbing the peace or do we want to end this? “
Parlade issued a similar statement in 2018 when he cited a list of universities, primarily in Metro Manila, as being used as “ground” for recruitment by the NPA.
University authorities denied Parlade’s accusation.
Parlade was also the same military general who claimed there was a “Red October” plot to overthrow President Rodrigo Duterte in 2018, which defense and security officials said foiled.
