Pole vaulter EJ Obiena claimed another podium after taking bronze at the 2020 Poznań Athletics Grand Prix on Saturday (Manila time) in Poland.
Obiena, the first Filipino to qualify for the Olympics, surpassed 5.52 meters in his second attempt to tie American Matt Ludwig for third place. He failed to jump 5.62 m.
Local vaulters Piotr Lisek and Robert Sobera ruled the tournament by taking first and second place, respectively. Lisek surpassed 5.72 meters, while Sobera clocked 5.52 on his first attempt.
Obiena’s victory comes just four days after beating Olympic stars and record holders on the World Continental Tour of Athletics in the Czech Republic.
The 24-year-old hit a season mark of 5.74 to take gold and finish ahead of 2012 Olympic gold medalist Renaud Lavillenie of France and reigning world champion Sam Kendricks.
Obiena is scheduled to compete in the ISTAF Berlin Continental Tour in Germany today before joining the Roma Diamond League in Italy on September 17 and the Doha Diamond League in Qatar on September 24.
