After their struggles in their most recent encounter, EJ Obiena made sure to bounce back in a big way in Rome.
The reigning Asian champion, who will head to the Tokyo Olympics, produced a massive 5.80-meter vault en route to winning bronze in the 2020 Rome Wanda Diamond League at Stadio Olimpico on Friday morning (time Manila).
Obiena quickly overcame her attempts of 5.45 and 5.60 meters, taking both in one fell swoop, to set the tone for her subsequent punts.
The 24-year-old then needed to clear 5.70 on his second attempt, before assuming his new season-best record at 5.80 after three attempts.
The three medalists of the Monaco stage of the Diamond League series battled for the medals of this stage when Obiena, along with Belgian Ben Broeders and Swede Armand Duplantis were left tackling 5.85 meters.
Ultimately, Obiena failed in her third and final attempt at a potential new personal best and Philippine record, but achieved another podium and another bronze in a Diamond League match.
Broeders once again pocketed another silver after posting 5.80 on his second try.
Duplantis, on the other hand, finally clinched another title after a world-leading 6.15 vault, just 0.03 meters from his own current world record. However, this new encounter record became the tallest open-air vault in history.
