The Lakers were closer to signing Dennis Schroder than they were to acquiring someone else. The move saw them trade Danny Green and their 28th pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder. This was a welcome step for the Lakers’ acquisition of talent, given the German player’s strengths.
With Anthony Davis also excluding his player option, a lot happened for the Los Angeles-based franchise on the final day. However, AD personally sounded quite positive about the organization’s latest business decision.
Anthony Davis backed the Lakers’ pick
AD sat down for an interview with Yahoo Sports, where he gave his first reaction on the news. Express, “With Schroder playing alongside LeBron… I think it’s a good play. He is easily the Sixth Man of the Year, like any year, he played very well alongside CP. I think he’s tough, he threw the ball well this year, he can get into the paint, he can find guys. So I think it was a good move, a good start. ”
The 27-year-old Schroder is the same age as AD, and therefore can be a great asset to future Lakers team building. Plus, he’s a phenomenal point guard, something the team needed. It definitely would have been better if Chris Paul had joined the Lakers, but his lean toward the Phoenix Suns contract left the Lakers with no other option.
Will Dennis Schroder turn out better than Jrue Holiday?
Jrue Holiday (Pelicans) is one of the best two-way point guards available in the NBA today. In addition, he has played six seasons with Anthony Davis and, therefore, they share a good camaraderie. The Lakers were also willing to package Kyle Kuzma for the Jrue Holiday trade, but the Pelicans aren’t too desperate to let him go.
Jrue averaged 19.1 points at 45.4% of FG in the 2019-20 season, while Dennis had a fairly competitive season of 18.9 points at 46.9%. The German player’s three-point shot has also improved over the years and thus may be another advantage for the Lakers who have struggled from center.
