Eala enters the quarterfinals of the French Open

MANILA – Alex Eala is in the quarterfinals of the French Open women’s division after defeating Spain’s Leyre Romero, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, at the Roland Garros Stadium in Paris on Wednesday.

The 15-year-old Filipino sensation bounced back from a surprising first-round outing in doubles play to come within three wins of winning her first Grand Slam championship.

Eala was on her way to dominance after taking set 1 in style.

However, Romero recovered in a close set 2, preparing the decisive third.

Then Eala made sure she wasn’t denied in the final set with another dominating performance.

Eala will now face Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic in Final 8.

Entering the tournament unranked, Noskova has already defeated one of the top contenders, beating 12th seed Alexandra Yepifanova of the United States in the first round.

Noskova edged out Flavie Brugnone of host country France, 6-1, 6-2, in the third round to set a date with Eala.

Eala, second-seeded at the French Open, is the highest-ranked player left in the race after seed Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva of Andorra, lost in the second round to unseeded Alina Charaeva of Russia.

Charaeva defeated Italian Matilde Paoletti, 6-3, 6-1, in the third round to also enter the quarterfinals, where German Alexandra Vecic, winner 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 over the Russian Oksana Selekhmateva. (PNA)
