Filipino tennis player Alex Eala advanced to the semifinal round of the 2020 French Open women’s singles on Wednesday night at Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France.
The 15-year-old Filipina defeated Czech Linda Nosková, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
“I am sharing this victory with all of you, especially those who need personal victories in their life,” Alex wrote on his Facebook page. “Very happy to be on the way to the semi-finals at Roland Garros 2020.”
Eala will face France’s Elsa Jacquemot in the semi-finals.
Jacquemot made it to the last 4 by beating Kristina Dmitruk of Belarus, 6-4, 6-4.
According to her uncle and former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Noli Eala, her niece also had to take a medical break during the second set of the match.
“Alex Eala took a medical time out just after the second set of his match against Linda Nosková,” he said in a tweet. “His glutes tightened like he says they sometimes do due to fatigue.”
Noli, however, said the injury “is not a big concern” to face Jacquemot in the semifinals.
Eala is the first Filipina and the second Filipino bet to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam event.
Felix Barrientos reached the junior men’s semifinals of the 1985 Wimbledon Championship.
