You cannot lose them all.
Terrafirma Dyip finally ended its losing streak in the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup by defeating Blackwater Elite, 110-101, yesterday Friday, November 6, 2020 at the University of Angeles Foundation Sports and Cultural Center with Smart 5G technology. The Dyip nearly lost a big lead with another third-quarter collapse, but it leaned on the hot hands of its young backcourt, on guards CJ Pérez and Juami Tiongson, who delivered points in the clutch, to tow their team towards the victory. The Dyip actually ended up with almost 13 months of uselessness. It was the first time the franchise had won a PBA game in more than a year. The Dyip beat Phoenix, 106-104, during a 2019 PBA Governors Cup elimination round game on October 25, 2019. Meanwhile, the Alaska Aces rallied back in the win column with a win. 102-94 on NorthPort Batang Pier. The Aces shot out the doors with a brilliant 11-0 start, had some anxious moments late in the game, but held on to finally post the win. With the victory the Aces (6 wins, 4 losses) climbed to sixth place behind TNT Tropang Giga (6-2), Barangay Ginebra (6-2), Phoenix Super LPG (6-3), Cerveceros de San Miguel (5 -3)) and Meralco Bolts (5-3). The other teams include Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (4-3), Magnolia Hotshots Pambansang Manok (4-4), NLEX Road Warriors (3-5), Blackwater (2-6), NorthPort (1-7) and Terrafirma ( 1-7). Batang Pier clung to Christian Standhardinger’s skirt to threaten in the fourth. But the Aces put up a 12-point lead, 94-82, with three minutes to go after Jeron Teng’s free throws. The Aces held on to that advantage to finally prevail. In this way, the Aces got at least one tiebreaker for a place in the quarterfinals and are keeping alive their hopes of a two-time lead to win. Standhardinger lit up his stat line with 39 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. His one-man show wasn’t enough to lead his team to victory. Celebrated Terrafirma rookie Roosevelt Adams delivered a double-double of 20 points and 16 rebounds to finally live up to the hype and keep Dyip’s hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals alive.
Coach Johnedel Cardel said he implored his players to seek victory to avoid going home winless. “Credit to all players. They kept fighting even though we were 0-7. I told them I didn’t want to go home from here at 0-11. At least makapanalo tayo for mabawasan ang pagiging nostalgia, ”said Cardel. Dyip can win a tie for eighth and final place in the quarterfinals if they win all their remaining games and Rain or Shine or Magnolia lose all of theirs.
