PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte will “definitely” extend the state of calamity in the country due to the persistent pandemic of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), Malacañang announced on Thursday.
In a virtual press conference, Palace spokesman Harry Roque Jr. said the declaration of the state of calamity was already on the president’s desk, “probably already signed.”
“Yes definitely. It’s on the President’s desk, probably already signed and on its way to the Office of the Executive Secretary,” Roque said.
The six-month declaration of calamity, signed by the president on March 16 through Proclamation 929, will expire in September.
As of Wednesday, there are a total of 272,934 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the country, with only 60,344 active cases. The death toll has reached 4,732, while recoveries soared to 207,858.
While scientific studies recently showed the flattening of the curve, the government has asked the public to continue to observe health protocols, such as wearing masks, washing hands frequently, and observing safe distancing from others, to avoid infection.
The public has been advised to be vigilant and is not pleased to further slow the spread of the virus.
In Proclamation 929 issued in March, Duterte declared a state of calamity in the country for the next six months amid the sharp increase in coronavirus cases.
It is valid for six months unless it is lifted or extended earlier as circumstances warrant.
Under the declaration of calamity, the president mobilized government agencies and local government units “to provide comprehensive assistance and cooperation with each other and mobilize the resources necessary to carry out critical, urgent and critical disaster response measures and assistance. appropriate in a timely manner and eliminate the threat of Covid-19. “
“All government agencies, with the support of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, are ordered to take all necessary measures to ensure peace and order in the affected areas, as necessary,” the proclamation read.
