MANILA, Philippines – President Alan Peter Cayetano and Marinduque Representative Lord Allan Velasco are scheduled to meet with President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday as the issue of speakers continues to heat up in the House of Representatives.

This was confirmed by PDP-Laban CEO Ron Munsayac on Monday. PDP-Laban is Velasco’s political party.

“Tomorrow there will be a meeting between Representatives Velasco and Cayetano,” Munsayac told INQUIRER.net in a text message.

Munsayac said Velasco will be accompanied by party leaders and allies from the House coalition.

The meeting will take place amid growing tension in the lower house, as several legislators, both from the majority and minority blocs, express their support for Cayetano’s continued leadership despite the mandate-sharing agreement between him and Velasco.

Under the agreement, Cayetano would serve as president of the House of Representatives for the first 15 months of the 18th Congress, while Velasco will be able to perform his duties for the remaining 21 months under a shared term agreement. If this continues, Cayetano’s mandate would end in October of this year.

When asked if they hope to solve the problem of participating as speakers during the meeting, Munsayac said: “Sana po (Hopefully). We hope that President Cayetano will adhere to the gentlemen’s agreement ”.

“It is important that we maintain the word of honor and trust in our leaders, especially politicians,” he added.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Velasco once again asked his colleagues to respect the term agreement shared between him and Cayetano, saying it was made “for God and our country.”

Velasco noted that the agreement between him and Cayetano was based on mutual trust and confidence, especially since it was negotiated and forged in the presence of President Rodrigo Duterte.
