MANILA- President Rodrigo Duterte reminded employers on Friday that they must provide humane working conditions to workers when the country marked Labor Day.

Duterte, who promised to stop the “endo,” said companies have a shared responsibility to provide workers with stable career opportunities.

“Endo” refers to the cyclical hiring and firing of workers to eliminate regularization with full benefits.

“This is how I remind everyone in the business sector of their shared responsibility to improve the lives of our workers by providing them with stable career opportunities and humane working conditions,” the President said in his Labor Day message.

The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguard workers’ rights.

“I take this opportunity to reaffirm the government’s commitment to uphold the dignity of work while safeguarding the rights of our workers through the humanization of laws and the equalization of social forces,” he said.

“Like all work, it is vital to forge a more inclusive and progressive Philippines, that every Filipino legitimately enjoy the fruits of his work and lead a more productive and dignified life,” he added.

Two years ago, Duterte signed an executive order that enforces the prohibition on illegal contracting and subcontracting.

Millions of workers have been affected by the economic consequences as companies were forced to suspend operations due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The government, through the Department of Labor and Employment, has provided monetary assistance to workers who applied for financial assistance.
