MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte said Wednesday that he would take responsibility if something went wrong in the use of the COVID-19 vaccines that the national government would purchase.

In a recorded speech broadcast Wednesday, Duterte said that any vaccine obtained by the vaccine czar Carlito Gálvez Jr.

“What Secretary Gálvez chooses will oblige me,” he said, speaking in part in Filipino. “It would be as if I was the one who should get vaccinated. So I will not buy a vaccine that is not correct. “

Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. is the main executor of the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Whatever Secretary Gálvez chooses, whatever his responsibility, will also be my responsibility. Ultimately, really, through all of this, if something goes wrong with what we elect and are negotiating in government now, at the end of the day, the responsibility is really mine, ”Duterte said.

The president guaranteed that the Covid-19 vaccines that Gálvez will purchase are safe and effective.

So far, the Philippines has already signed agreements for injections with vaccines from three pharmaceutical companies: Sinovac BioTech in China, Serum Institute in India and AstraZeneca in England.
