Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 14) – President Rodrigo Duterte and his Cabinet gave the green light to the pilot test of face-to-face classes in areas that will be considered low risk for COVID-19 in January 2021.

The essay proposed by the Department of Education was approved during Monday’s cabinet meeting, said presidential spokesman Harry Roque.

He said the face-to-face test classes should take place in January next year, and the exact date will be determined by DepEd. Only selected schools in low-risk areas can participate.

DepEd will also coordinate with the National COVID-19 Task Force to ensure strict health and safety measures are in place.

“We need to emphasize that face-to-face classes in schools where this may be allowed will not be mandatory, but voluntary on the part of the student / parents,” said Roque. “Parental permission must be presented for the student to participate in face-to-face classes.

Basic education classes resumed in October in the framework of blended learning, which includes a combination of online sessions, radio and television broadcasts, and printed self-study modules. Classes at other levels are also taught primarily online.

Duterte previously banned face-to-face classes across the country until a COVID-19 vaccine is available. The government expects the vaccines to be approved for use and arrive in the country in the first quarter of 2021.
