CITY OF LEGAZPI – President Duterte on Sunday ordered the Department of Health (DOH) to accelerate the rehabilitation of health centers damaged by the series of typhoons that hit the Bicol region recently.
In the situation report on the effects of typhoon “Ulises” (international name: Vamco) carried out in the town of Pili, province of Camarines Sur, on Sunday, the Secretary of Health, Francisco Duque III, said that the region needed around P290 million for the repair of hospitals, rural health. facilities, barangay health posts and other offices.
Duque, speaking during the briefing chaired by the President, secured sufficient funds for the rehabilitation of these medical facilities.
‘Cut the time’
The president arrived in Pili by helicopter around 4 p.m. and immediately headed to the provincial capital where he met with local officials. Earlier in the day, he visited the typhoon-struck Cagayan Valley and made an aerial survey of the typhoon devastation in Camarines Sur.
Mr. Duterte emphasized the need to speed up the process of delivering the services needed by affected communities.
“Historically it’s that the government moves slowly, especially the national government, so if you can do it, cut the time to something like half or more, especially now that time is of the essence actually, they need to call those things they need, ”he said.
Basic service One of the priorities, said Duque, was the repair of the isolation and quarantine centers for the response to the coronavirus in the provinces of Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte and Catanduanes that were damaged by typhoon “Rolly” (Goni) , which struck Bicol on November 1 and by Ulises last week, causing widespread flooding mainly in the Camarines provinces.
“We need money right away because this is the basic service that needs immediate attention and repair,” he said.
Previously, DOH reported damage to the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital and the Bicol Regional Diagnostic and Reference Laboratory in the city of Legazpi, the Bicol Medical Center in the city of Naga, and the General Hospital and Geriatric Medical Center of the Bicol Region in the city of Cabusao, Camarines Sur.
The damaged local government hospitals were the Ziga Memorial District Hospital in the city of Tabaco, Albay, and the Juan M. Alberto Memorial District Hospital in the city of San Andrés, Catanduanes.
