Duterte has the final say on PhilHealth

MANILA, Philippines – Chairman Rodrigo Duterte will respect the findings of the task force investigating the alleged wrongdoing besetting Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth), regardless of who is responsible.

“The president ordered the task force to carry out an investigative activity to recommend charges against the people. I believe the president will respect whatever evidence the task force finds, regardless of who is involved, ”said presidential spokesman Harry Roque.

Roque added, however, that the president would have the last word on the investigative report of the working group headed by the Secretary of Justice, Menardo Guevarra.

As of noon Monday, the task force has yet to present its investigative report to the president, which will include recommendations on bringing charges against those responsible.

Last week, Duterte again defended the Secretary of Health, Francisco Duque III, pending the publication of the report of the working group.

The president said he saw no problem if Duque’s only fault was “negligence,” as long as Duque was not guilty of corruption as chairman of the PhilHealth board of directors.

Previously, the Senate recommended that Duque be replaced as a result of his own investigation into corruption at PhilHealth. Senators also called for his resignation.

Roque refused to anticipate Duterte’s actions on the task force report.

“Since he is the one who created it, he will accept the factual findings of his own working group,” he said.
