MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte has allowed the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to grant an Emergency Use Authorization (USA) to the planned COVID-19 vaccines that will be available in the Philippines.

In Executive Order No. 121 signed on December 1 and released Wednesday, Duterte authorized the FDA’s CEO to issue an EUA for COVID-19 drugs or vaccines.

With the FDA clearance to issue the USA, the approval process for COVID-19 vaccines will be shortened from six months to 21 days.

Earlier, the Secretary of Health, Francisco Duque III, asked the president to grant the FDA USA to “reduce red tape.”

Pfizer and Moderna are among the pharmaceutical companies that have already applied for an EUA of their COVID-19 vaccines with US health regulators.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 vaccines from China’s Sinovac and Russia’s Gamaleya Research Institute have already obtained USA from their respective governments.
