Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 15) – Due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the country, President Rodrigo Duterte urged private hospitals to increase the beds allocated for infected patients.

“I appeal for the country and for the people … Your help will be of great help,” Duterte said during his recorded national address broadcast Monday.

The president said that COVID-19 infections vary in different parts of the country, with some areas registering rapid recoveries while others take time to detect new cases.

“Everyone will remember one day that there was a great epidemic that passed through our lives and we were able to cope with it with a lot of mutual help,” Duterte added.

The head of implementation of the National COVID-19 Task Force, Carlito Gálvez, informed the president that in November more than 1,000 additional dedicated beds will be available for COVID-19 patients. He added that hospitals such as Rizal Medical Center, Philippines General Hospital, and Batangas Medical Center will strengthen their bed capacity for COVID-19 patients.

“It is about time we modernize the DOH (Department of Health). We need to modernize our hospitals,” Gálvez asked Duterte to improve the country’s health system during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As of Monday afternoon, the country has confirmed 265,888 COVID-19 cases along with 53,754 active infections. Some 4,630 people died and 207,504 patients recovered from the virus.
