PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte appointed actor and former governor of Pampanga, Mark Lapid, as director of operations (COO) of the Tourism Infrastructure and Business Zone Authority (Tieza), Malacañang said on Saturday.
In a statement, Palace spokesman Harry Roque Jr. confirmed Duterte’s approval of Lapid’s nomination in a letter addressed to the Tieza Board of Directors dated January 5, 2021.
“We confirm that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte signed the appointment of Mr. Mark Lapid as a member of the Board of Directors, Tourism Infrastructure Authority and Business Zone on January 5, 2021,” said Roque.
“Tourism is one of the most important sectors of our economy, and the appointment of Mr. Lapid, who is no stranger to Tieza, bodes well to contribute to the recovery and growth of tourism, which has been affected by the pandemic, ”he said. additional.
Lapid, son of Senator Manuel “Lito” Lapid, was first appointed by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as Acting General Manager of the Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) in 2008.
A year later, when the PTA was reorganized through the Tourism Act of 2009 to form Tieza, Lapid continued to lead the deputy agency of the tourism department as director of operations.
He was appointed by former President Benigno Aquino 3rd to the same position in 2014, but resigned in 2016 to pursue a failed Senate candidacy.
Lapid also served as governor of Pampanga from 2004 to 2007.
