DTI studies requests for good night price increases

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Commerce and Industry (DTI) is evaluating requests for price increases for good night items and canned goods.
The DTI has received requests from manufacturers of good night items and canned meat and sardines to increase prices by less than one percent to around three percent, said the Secretary of Commerce, Ramón López, yesterday during the public information session “ Laging Handa ”.
López said manufacturers are requesting price adjustments to cover their cost increases.
“These are now being studied by our consumer protection group if it is reasonable to have an increase,” he said.
Manufacturers’ suggested retail prices (SRPs) for good night products, as well as basic necessities and premium essentials, must be approved by DTI.
Products on the SRP list for Christmas Eve or Christmas Eve include ham, fruit cocktail, cheese, sandwich spread, ball cheese, spaghetti, macaroni for salad, sauce for spaghetti and mayonnaise.
Basic necessities and premium commodities, such as canned and other food products, bottled water, dairy products, and common household or kitchen supplies are also covered by the SRP list.
Lopez said the DTI is closely monitoring those products to protect consumers.
“At the end of the day, our consumers are advised to really select the brands they find profitable,” he said.
He said that since many brands are expected to have promotions for the upcoming holiday season, consumers are encouraged to opt for those that offer good deals.
Meanwhile, Lopez said the DTI supports having a price cap on the swab tests.
He said that while the maximum price for swab tests is up to the Department of Health (DOH), the DTI is willing to support the agency.
“We are waiting and coordinating with DOH. And we will help in the implementation, monitoring the price cap ”, he said.
