The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will distribute at least 900 bicycles to skilled workers starting next week.
The director of the Bureau of Workers with Special Concerns (BWSC), Ma. Karina Perida-Trayvilla said that the program aims to provide alternative livelihoods to displaced employees, informal sector workers and the self-employed during the pandemic of the new coronavirus disease (Covid-19).
In addition to the bicycle, qualified recipients will also receive an insulated bag, helmet, reflective vest, bicycle rack, and a cell phone with an electronic charging wallet.
Trayvilla explained that workers who wish to become beneficiaries of his free bike program can apply at the nearest DOLE field office or public employment service office (PESO) to undergo profiling.
She said applicants who qualify for the program will gain the necessary skills and training in safety, financial knowledge to be able to join existing companies that offer bike delivery services like Grab and LalaFood and LalaMove.
Trayvilla said the first batch of recipients will receive the bikes and accompanying items from October 26-28.
He said that beneficiaries will come from the National Capital Region (NCR) and regions 2, 3, 4-A and 5.
DOLE will distribute additional bikes in Cebu and other parts of the country next month.
